NEC Infrontia’s Pocket@i EX, industrial strength PDA

Some PDA news of a device running Windows CE. 5.0 "NEC Infrontia has announced a new PDA called the “Pocket@i EX” that is equipped for industrial use. In addition to being able to withstand a 5 foot drop to solid concrete, it is dust/waterproof, and can allegedly be used even while wearing gloves. Things get more industrial when you learn about how it will be available in four different models: one for scanning barcodes, one for scanning QR codes, one for RFID tags, and one with no scanner at all. Sure, it leaves a bit to be desired on the technical end with a screen resolution of only 240 x 320, but given the applications of the device, that’s probably not a huge deal. Runs Windows CE 5.0."

FIC AquaPAD+ runs Linux, includes 802.11g, Bluetooth

Taiwan’s First International Computer (FIC) has upgraded its AquaPAD webpad; the AquaPAD+ now includes 802.11g WiFi, IrDA, PCMCIA, USB, VGA output and embedded Linux, powered by a Transmeta Crusoe running at 800 MHz to 1 GHz. The 2.6-pound unit has an 8.4-inch 800x600 touchscreen display, and can also run Windows XP, XP Embedded or CE (it includes a CF/Microdrive slot as well). More on this over at the Engadget website.

Mossberg down on the Pepper Pad

We have talked about the Pepperpad before and it looks like that Walt Mossberg is not too happy with it according to Engadget. "Good ol’ Walt had a look at the Pepper Pad, the Linux-based tablet device that wants to be a simple, convenient tool for surfing the web and playing digital media around the house. Mossberg’s not so hot on it, though — he reports it’s not as easy or intuitive to use as claimed, and that many of the built-in applications seem limited and rough around the edges."

OQO Model 01 handheld PC reviewed on The Register

For those interested in what a Palmtop PC is like, Mike Cane has given me the heads up that the OQO has been reviewed over at The Register today. "There's no denying that the OQO Model 01 is one of the coolest devices that I've ever got my paws on. It is an amazingly compact yet fully featured PC, in a very similar vein to the Sony Vaio U series. However, there are some obvious advantages that the Model 01 has over the U70P. Top of that list has to be size: the Sony was pretty close to pocket size, but the Model 01 really is. I've been carrying the Model 01 around with me for the past couple of weeks and it fits snugly into my back pocket."

According to the company, the latest rev includes new tools for developers, such as a new UI toolkit, as well as support for Bluetooth, WiFi UPnP, USB, XML, SOAP and other common standards.

Sharp’s “veil view” angled dual-display LCD

Not Handheld related but I still thought it was interesting. Engadget picks up on this. "We’ve got a feeling they spent more time developing this one than they did thinking of reasons it should be developed (uh, yeah, you know what we mean), but Sharp’s announced a new dual-displal technology (which Babelfish translated to “veil view”—we kinda like it) capable of showing completely different screens at different viewing angles. Apparently with mass production already started, Sharp wants to get these things in notebooks asap—but we can’t help but wonder if their reasoning is a little flawed."

Clio NXT pushed back to fall

Looks like those rumors of a delayed launch for the Clio NXT were right, after all. The long-awaited successor to the cult Windows CE-based laptop/tablet was due out in April, but manufacturer Data Evolution now says the NXT won’t be available until the fall, due to engineering delays. The link between the PDA and the notebook is getting even closer with the Flybook. Dialogue presented its fully-functional 9”x 6” laptop at Computex. The Flybook weighs in at 2.6 pounds, will have a 1.1-GHz Pentium M “Dothan” chipset and up to 512MB of RAM. Sharp Updates Its Clamshell Zaurus

Last fall, Sharp introduced the Zaurus SL-C3000, which was one of the very first handhelds to have a built-in hard drive. Now, the company has announced a slightly updated version of this model. Like its predecessor, the Zaurus SL-C3100 will include a 1-inch hard drive that can hold 4 GB of data. Both models use a clamshell design with a 3.7-inch, 640-by-480-pixel (VGA) screen on one side and a keyboard on the other. In addition, their screens can rotate and then be closed down over the keyboard. More over at Brighthand.

A Taiwanese company called PDC have announced an in-car computer called the SmartRider, which runs on Windows CE.NET 4.2. Stephen Trew dropped me a line to point me towards this Linux Clamshell PDA called The Unication Magpie. "Anyway, while we’re on the topic of Linux-powered clamshell PDAs, is this that “VOIP PDA” that Unication was showing off at Computex last week? Not 100% sure, but the Magpie does look about the same and it does come with built-in VoIP software. Besides running on Linux, the Magpie also has a 200MHz processor, built-in 802.11b WiFi, a mini QWERTY keyboard, an FM radio transmitter (which is a little unusual for a PDA, but whatevs), stereo speakers, and an SD memory card slot." Eventhough I have a laptop, I still use my h/pc
Eventhough I have a laptop, I still use my h/pc. I'm the scretary at a small church my mother belongs to and not having to lug the laptop there is a (no pun intended) Godsend. I'm able to update the congregation with upcoming events, take notes/make appointments for the Pastor, as well as use the free Olivetree Bibile Reader (the KJV). Like others, I use the NEC MobilePro 780 and although it's not the latest and greatest, for me it's still a usefull alternative to a notebook when full computer use isn't needed. Also, with one of my cellphones still having an IR port, I can cruise the web on it wirelessly. ;)

I just wanted to offer a reminder to all that you should never forget the power of old technology. As a full-time student and Pastor I’ve been using a mobilepro 780 with a couple of cf cards for the past almost 4 years and I don’t think you can beat the sheer portability or reliability of these machines. In all that time I’ve only had ONE crash that required a hard reset, as opposed to my destop which I have to reformat and reinstall windows every 6-8 months usually. Notes in class and sermon writing on textmaker are pleasurable and easy. PocketBible gives me the resources I need, and games abound for relaxing. Can’t beat the screen size for reading ebooks either. Kudos to NEC on making one great tough product. Did I mention they are cheap on ebay nowadays too? J Check them out, it’s worth the time. Unless you are hoping to do serious web browsing, the mobilepro 780 is still one of the best devices IMHO that you can buy, especially for the money.- Geoff deJong

Perhaps you should consider buying a Linux-powered Sharp Zaurus handheld instead. Unfortunately, the default Qtopia desktop environment and the alternate OpenZaurus environment both lack the ability to run some specialized programs. The obvious solution is to install the X Windowing System on the Zaurus. The distribution Pocket Workstation is based on Debian Linux and can run in a chroot environment on a storage card, using the vendor's preinstalled native Linux system for most hardware access."

We've found time to add a BUNCH of NEW Keyboard Skin designs to our offerings! Many are popular Laptop models (check out our Keyboard Skins section in our OnLine Catalog). Seems that a number of our HP Jornada 720, NEC MobilePRO (790 and 900) and PSION NetBook military users have been boasting to their Panasonic ToughBook peers that our Keyboard Skins offer better protection from the local weather and atmospheric conditions of the Iraqi, Saudi and Afghani countryside. While not one of our customers had a problem with sandy grit getting under their keys - it seems that the ToughBook has been getting a serious beating! Must be, because we've been filled a NUMBER of LARGE orders to help protect the keyboards of those mega-dollar babies! What started as one or two orders - here and there, soon grew beyond our expectations! Now, not only are we getting regular orders of between 1,000 and 2,500 - just for the ToughBook, but also quite a few for Skins to protect a number of "civilian" style notebook computers... like Toshiba Satellites, IBM ThinkPads and Dell Latitudes, to name but a few.

We've recently noticed that large orders of Keyboard Skins for handheld PCs have really picked up in the private sector... in BULK - for insurance companies, medical partnerships, teaching hospitals, pharmaceutical sales, home inspection, industrial design and universities. Even various Department of Homeland Security agencies that bought huge lots of inexpensive laptops are looking to extend their life - by protecting them with our Keyboard Skins!

Keep in mind, our Keyboard Skins not only keep things like water, coffee, tea, soda, beer and the blowing grit and sands of the Iraqi desert OUT from behind the keyboards, but our protective keyboard covers also keep the occasional loose keys IN place and prevent them from getting lost!

"Looks like Sharp is going to tantalize us yet again with another PDA offering that we may never get our hands on in the States (at least not directly). The SL-C1000 looks to have similar specs to its cousin, the SL-C3000 but, rather notably, sans hard drive (which we can only hope will cut the price tag on this significantly, though no word on the dollar sign factor yet). In the past contests we have seen great improvement of entries in quality, performance and sophistication. Here is the result of the last contest:

NS BASIC Corporation today announced the immediate availability of NS Basic/CE 5.1. THe new release adds support for Windows CE.NET 4.2 devices, such as the NEC MobilePro 900c and the Psion Teklogix WorkAbout Pro and NetBook Pro.

NS Basic/CE is a VB-like development tool. It allows you to create applications on a Windows desktop computer which will run on Windows CE devices. A unique feature of the development tool is that it can also be used to develop on the device itself. With the large screen and full keyboard of devices such as the NEC MobilePro 900c and the Psion Teklogix NetBook Pro, complex applications can be effectively created and debugged directly on the unit.

"We've worked hard to make NS Basic/CE easy to use." said George Henne, President of NS BASIC Corporation. "Porting it to Windows CE.NET 4.2 devices gives developers a flexible and powerful solution for developing enterprise applications."

The new release also delivers numerous user interface improvements. MDA IV,The MDA IV

Although it is not running Windows CE, T-Mobile Germany took the wraps off the MDA IV, a cellular-wireless Pocket PC with a clamshell design. Now I think it looks great. I would have to see what the keyboard is like but for a PDA this thing looks great. It would and could never replace the 720 for me or my new NEC device but on the whole this thing is a beauty and if it comes out here in the UK I will certainly buy one to test it out and report back to you. Bargain PDA have posted a review of the clamshell device, the Zaurus SL-C3000 which runs Linux. It's quite a lengthy review. "With my own Zaurus C860, I have really tried to leverage its power to let me write Word documents, manage my contacts, write perl and C++ code and listen to MP3s, and I haven't regretted the choice of platform. The fact that none of the clamshell Zaurus models come with built-in Wi-Fi is still frustrating - some people argue that the design leaves the users' options open, but I am within Wi-Fi coverage for all but about 2 hours each day and I'd like to have instant net access without having to swap out a CF card (I'm not quite annoyed enough to gvie up my Zaurus, though)."

I have just purchased a nec 900c handheld.while making a partnership with my desktop by way of usb I keep running into a problem.when I attempted to make a partnership to sync I get this message' files needed,the file 'wceusbsh 'sys' on[unknown] is needed,type the path where the file is located then click okay setting a system restore point and backing up old files is what the window say just before I get the message.I have tried everything can anyone help me please.Also do the usb memory sticks work on this unit if not how can I type information then read it on desktop with out syncing. Got an HP J720 to play with!Got an HP J720 to play with!

Hi Sammy, FINALLY got a J720 to play around with for a while. I have not had the chance to but have been wanting to for some time. So far it looks like a great device! I love the size but will have to see if I can get used to the keyboard. It is significantly smaller than my IBM z50 HPC. I also got an HP J680 to compare with and an NEC 770. As you can see, I am HPC'd to the hilt! ;)

One question I have, can you use the Activesync passthrough feature with the J720 to access the Internet and, if so, how do you set it up? I don't have a wireless network (I know, I know...) and wanted to at least try using passthrough like I do with my PPC. I've Googled this but could not find any decent answer but figured Handheld Addict readers are the ones to ask. Any help with this would be appreciated! I use a Jornada 720, now as a link between laptops etc it is so easy to move my important details over such as ebooks, addresses and favourite folders. I never travel without it as even in a cyber café I move the favourite folders etc.. (Obviously there I don’t move delicate info) I also use the jornada to check my digital pictures and send them to a server for storage while travelling. I like hand held addict as I can always find information or tips on how to use my handhelds.

"HPC Translate is a utility that allows the user to translate single words from one language to another. It works on Microsoft Windows-powered Pocket PCs, Handheld PCs, and Palm-Size PCs. Currently HPC Translate includes English and Spanish dictionaries. Each dictionary contain approximately 30,000 words."

This looks like an interesting PDA which I spotted over at Brighthand this morning. "It seems like cellular-wireless Pocket PCs are cropping up everywhere these days. However, China-based Amoi has announced one that stands out from the crowd. The G6301 will use a clamshell design. When closed, it will have a numberpad and a 96-by-64-pixel, 1.1-inch, OLED display. Above this will be a 1.3 megapixel camera. Opening it will reveal a QWERTY keypad with a horizontal orientation. On the other side of the hinge will be a 320-by-240-pixel, 2.4-inch display. "

PDAs Busted at This Year's CESI need to keep organized
PDAs were virtually nowhere to be found this year at the CES according to Brian's editorial at BargainPDA. It is a shame a lot of people have been saying recently that the PDA is dead and people are moving to more smartphone devices. Personally I would rather use my NEC or 720 as I can achieve a lot more and I need to keep organized believe me.

So I have a NEC MobilePro 900c Handheld PC and what do I think so far? Obtained from Expansys . It's a lovely device, the screen is crisp, the keyboard smells new, the device is rugged. I can say this it's a great device and I will be talking about it in more detail tomorrow. I have to watch out though because I keep dropping crumbs and on the keyboard as I have been playing with it since last week and cannot stand parting with it.

That got me thinking about how I never found it very reasonable to draw much of anything on my PDA screen. I feel like I could do so much if my PDA was like a real notepad of Post-it notes. But it always feels like I was drawing on my PDA with a crayon on a tiny piece of paper. Must be something to do with the resolution of the digitizers. In fact, I remember hearing somewhere that the digitizer resolution can often be much less than the screen display resolution. So if we could design the next PDAs, better digitizing gets my vote for a needed improved hardware feature."

Engadget has news that Seagate is working on a 5GB CF drive. "They said way back in June that they were working on this, and Seagate has finally unveiled their new 5GB CompactFlash drive. The 1-inch drive, which’ll also come in a 2.5GB version, should be out next month and is mainly aimed at pro digital photographers who can never have enough storage space for all those RAW image files (though we’re betting this thing will also start showing up in portable media players and maybe even camcorders and PDAs before too long)."
