USER THOUGHT: Software that works on HPC: OpenTTD for HPCs

From Van this morning. "Hi Sammy, Just to let you know that I have tried OpenTTD (0.3.4) PocketPC port on my netBook Pro (a Windows CE.NET 4.2 hpc) and it works nice and in full screen  (600x800 mode). You only have to modify the openttd.cfg; search for resolution=240,320 and change it to your device's screen size (e.g. Jornada720: 640,240 or Sig3: 800,480). I have attached a screenshot of the game." <br>- Sammy (Manchester, UK)

USER THOUGHT: End of the NEC Mobile Pro 900?
Sammy, It's been a long time sense I've written. I heard something unconfirmed that you may want to watch. Our rep at CDW has told us that they will no longer be carrying the NEC MobilePro 900. I don't know at this time if the 900c line is being discontinued or not. I did hear that the MobilePro 900 is out of production. This is rumor as far as I'm concerned at this time unless you've heard something. Best wishes for a Happy Holiday.

    EDITORIAL: Listening to those books
Hi Sammy, Thought I would drop you an update on listening to Audible.com audio books on the Jornada 720.  Audible.com provides tons of books and subscriptions so I'm pretty happy to be able to listen to them without buying an MP3 player or ppc device.  You'll need a pretty big CF card to hold the books, as they can easily run over 50 megs, but since 1GB CF cards are running at $70 that shouldn't be too much of a problem.  I was able to get it to work by downloading the legacy PPC 2000 version of the player for the Arm processor and installing it on the Jornada.  Surprisingly, it worked fine, with the caveat that I am not totally certain which dll's I have added over time for running ppc programs; certainly none other than the common ones floating around out there (you may not need any, I really don't know much about it all).  The one problem I have with it is that I cannot close the player, and have to reset the device to exit the program - if anyone has tips on that it would be great.  Hope this helps some people - check out audible, its pretty useful.

EDITORIAL: Image 911 introduces even more HPC Skins
Sammy,  After nearly a month's work... we've introduced our new OnLine Catalog and have added even more Keyboard Skins (with far more being made as I type)!  The hyperlink address for the Keyboard Skin page is: http://www.image911.net/store/index.php?cPath=27

More of these devices are being deployed with our respective servicemen and women!  Were told that not only are our familiar and beloved handhelds being used to communicate across the battlefields (via bluetooth and wireless LAN), but on a more personal level.... they keep the soldiers intouch with their loved ones back home.  Those with the devices do not have to wait for access time on a terminal, rather, they simply tap into an existing wireless connection - where available (usually at the major base camps).  The devices are also more portable than a laptop and can be stored in a pocket or pouch!

Our Keyboard Skins help to keep the weather, dust and usual desert dirt from damaging the keyboards and getting into the "works".  The latest deployment of soldiers had many of them suited with these (and other handheld/Pocket PCs) as "standard issue".  Of course, the software is proprietary (can you say, "IF YOU LOOSE THIS or IF THE SOFTWARE FALLS INTO ENEMY HANDS...").

All I know is that we just sent another 2,500 Skins of a mixed selection - including those for HP Jornada 720s, NEC MobilePRO 790 and 900-series, as well as many for the new PSION NetBook PRO.

...Just thought I'd share same with you and the readers!

    PAX,

    Sandy

    untitledWEBSITE: Handheld Underground
Handheld Underground (HHU) has officially been spun off from PocketRocketFX.com to become a stand-alone site, and is now located at http://www.HandheldUnderground.com. While there are a number of excellent sites covering HPCs (check our links page), Handheld Underground is the only one specifically dedicated to entertainment-related downloads. For its relaunch, HHU also has been given a bit of a design tweak. Navigation has been improved and whole new sections have been added.

Currently, HHU hosts 175 pages of content specifically for the HPC, including 1400+ wallpapers, 350 megs of video (movie trailers, short films, music videos, tv commercials...), 225 megs of audio (books, old time radio...), ebooks in a variety of formats (HTML, Palm Reader, Mobipocket Reader), Pocket Streets 2001 maps and more. New content will be added on a
    regular basis.

Although the GoogleAd words program has been introduced to HHU, Pocket PC Magazine remains the only industry-related affiliate program to be found on the site and visitors may make donations via PayPal.

EDITORIAL : PDAs are saving the e-book industry

This author and critic posits that PDAs
    and smartphones are revitalizing e-books
, and I'd have to agree. I wonder how the numbers on downloads from, say, the Baen Free Library (The leading free introduction to e-books, with over 50 contemprary, free, un-DRM'd titles), show which kinds of devices are getting the most downloads?

Baen's pay site is also interesting, in that it offers all formats. When you buy an e-book there, it stays bought, as you can re-download it in any offered format (PDF, RTF for M$ Word & Pocket Word, HTML for Plucker, .PDB for MobiPocket as well as .REB for the remaining Rocket E-Book readers).

    USER THOUGHT: OQO Handheld

This is the first side-by-side comparison pic I've seen. Look at how TINY the OQO is next to it! OQO owners say people generally ignore the unit when they're using it in public, thinking it's a PDA! And yet it is a full PC, running XP!

    SOFTWARE: GAPI
Well there is a new version of GAPI for Handheld Computers. "While DirectDraw is not available to game developers for the Pocket PC platform, Microsoft created a game API especially for the Pocket PC named "GAPI" -- the game application programming interface. It allows direct access to the display memory. Unfortunately Microsoft has forgotten the Handheld PC users. GAPI for HPC's is an binary and sourcecode compatible version for Handheld PC's. More details and download. With this GX.DLL some of the PPC2002 and WM2003 applications are now also usable on HPC’s."
