Join the AOL Handheld debate on our forum - We use AOL 2.0 on our HP Jornada 720, and connect via a TCP/IP connection - via a Belkin Wireless PC Card and adapter (then to a LinkSys router, and finally to a Paradyne modem).  At first, that little yellow fella would run from one box to another in record form... and I'd be online in no time!  ...But, over the past week, it just seemed to require more and more "reboots" as the device would "lock up" while it was loading.  Now, it "hangs" after the second yellow guy appears in the center of the first two boxes... leaving the AOL logo in the last box on the right.  Has anyone had similar problems?  Their tech support team won't even discuss the matter as the software is no longer supported by AOL.  HELP!" - details

I see Calligrapher has been updated however I cannot see whether the update is for HPC's or just for Pocket PC's. I am going to figure its just for the PPC. However the HPC version is still avaialble - details

USER THOUGHT: Sammy I have been sporting my 720 at our local Golfing Championships to keep score on my HPC. People think my 720 is pretty amazing considering it is a number of years old. It still looks cool and is sure handy in recognising my ongoing scores. Oh by the way its not a bad PIM too ;-) Happy holidays to all readers of such a fine site such as Handheld Addict
- John Stanton

USER THOUGHT: I have received an early Christmas present. Thabks to my wife who picked up a J728 of ebay I am using it now to send this email to the site and I have to say it is fantastic. I owned a 720 for around a month before it was stolen and I am now glad that I have a replacement. I was an avid Psion user especially the Psion Series 5mx and I have to say that the 728 is a real winner. Keep up the good work.

FOR SALE: One of our senior firefighters has a pristine HP Jornada 720 handheld device - that NEVER left the office (let alone his desk) from the day he took it outta the box. He is one of those guys that had no use for a computer; hand wrote most everything - from meeting minutes, to personal missives, to filling our reports. The 720 was his "access to the outsdie world"... and was his "email portal". Well, he's moved on in rank and file, and has gotten an IPAQ that is wired 24/7... so he is not needing the 720. It comes with the usual docking station, AC Charger, Serial cable, Battery, etc., as well as the installed Keyboard Skin (and a second one - for later use). The device is very clean. What makes it even MORE special - is that he had attached two cloisine (enamel on gold metal) images on the surface of the outside lid. One is the Firefigher's Maltese Cross - which is located above the Windows logo in the lower right corner, and the other is a "ROCK-n-RESCUE" logo - just above the Jornada logo plate. The latter, as he is very much into high and low angle (rope) rescue. Anyhow, he's looking to get $350 for the whole thing. Feel free to contact me - via this venue, or: image911@aol.com, Toll Free (in US): 888-432-7393 (Station Office), or (802) 948-2290.

HARDWARE: Yes I know it does not look like a HPC but it does run Windows CE News - Tiger Telematics's Gametrac European subsidiary is getting set to introduce a new Windows CE.NET powered mobile gaming device called the Gametrac. Physically the Gametrac is about the size of a pager. Features include 3D Mophun gaming, SMS text messaging (with predictive text), MP3 music (with remote download), video playback (MPEG4), a built-in digital camera, and GPS tracking system. It's also equipped with Bluetooth for use in multi-player gaming, and accepts MMC card accessories - More information

We know that POS have been working on all kinds of customisations in the past and it's not unreasonable to think that they could be working on custom Revo. THOUGHT: We normally have a great atmosphere in the Handheld Addict forum however recently I came across an entry from someone asking for the serial number of software that they HAD NOT purchased. Can I ask anyone who ever considers posting a question, again, on the same lines not to please. If you want HPC software then support the platform and go out and purchase it. Do not rely on others to give you the codes as you will be met with disapointment.

RESOURCE: I wonder what this will mean if it happens? - Nokia Corp. representatives declined to comment on reports Monday that the company is looking to up its stake in mobile phone software developer Symbian Ltd. by acquiring Psion PLC. However, at least one industry analyst said that he wouldn't be surprised if the Finnish handheld giant snapped up Psion in coming weeks in an effort to wield greater control over the future of Symbian - details and to read in full

RESOURCE: Well, after the successes of our current Keyboard Skins, we are now in production of even more clamshell device keyboard protection!

After MANY requests from the general public, corporate sector and governmental agencies, alike... we have begun production of NEW Keyboard Skins for the NEC (NTT/DoCoMo) Sigmarion III, Psion's Coxion WebBook and the Sharp HC-7000/Telios 7000/Intermec 6651... just for starters!

It's good to know that the clamshell style of personal data assistant is NOT going by the wayside, but is (at least, for now) is here to stay! We are pleased, as ALL of us at Fire-Rescue are AVID HP Jornada & NEC MobilePRO users! - details

WEBSITE: We have been asked if we could mention Usedhandhelds.com. I have mentioned them before I know Chris has at HPCFactor however I decided to give the site a more detailed look this afternoon. On offer at the moment they have the 780 by NEC, which Andrew Wolstenholme one of our writers believes is a good HPC and I agree with him. Since 1985 Thaddeus Computing has supported mobile device users with magazines and catalogs, and by buying and selling new and pre-owned devices. They are always after taking off your hands second hand HPC's and obviously they are the source of all HPC's now that stock has dried up. It is worth a browse and you will find HPC's at excellent prices. They also have a no risk policy for those purchasing or selling their HPC - "We take all the worry out of buying or selling units. If you sell us units, you will get paid the agreed upon price within a week. If you buy our units, they may be returned if you are not satisfied, and we also offer a generous warrantee program." - Go take a look.

SOFTWARE: SoftMaker has announced that on November 11, they will sell 1111 copies of TextMaker for $11.11 or EUR 11.00 each! This is a dramatic savings from the usual list price.

Here's the web site with details - http://www.softmaker.de/index,en.htm

As one of the many Jornada 7XX users who has purchased this software package, I can say that it is easily one of the very top packages available for this machine. I can't imagine a better time to buy. No. I have absolutely no connection with SoftMaker other than being a satisfied customer.
- JB

SOFTWARE: Here is something that Jay Brown has sent into us - Sammy take a look at TxtReader and see what you think - There is huge collection (Internet, other sources) of literature books, reference books, encyclopedias, lectures, and lots of other materials and documents in text format (ASCII code). Word documents could be converted to plain text format with Microsoft Word. You may store bookshelves on your Pocket/Handheld PC. TxtReader works with documents of any size. The size of TxtReader in the memory is constant when it runs, so it saves much memory. This program was developed specially for Pocket PC to extend its power but it also works on Handhelds." It seems to support HPC's although the screenshot shows the Pocket PC it does work for HPC's anyway here is the link - http://www.solyanik.com/valeriy/Reader.html

HARDWARE: Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd announced that it built a prototype wireless LAN-capable compact personal digital assistant (PDA) featuring a 4-inch SVGA LCD display with a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. As a compact-size PDA, it is the world's first to have a 4-inch SVGA display and capability of browsing contents for a PC, according to the company.
The field-sequential color display expresses colors by switching RGB at high speed without using color filters, which helps improve resolution levels compared with conventional PDAs. When viewing contents designed for the normal PC screen size, this will save users from frequent scrolling or viewing the entire screen in reduced size, the company said.
As it comes with a Compact Flash card socket, it is accessible for public telephone networks using a card-type PHS. Also, it is compatible with Remote Desktop, PC remote control function supported by Microsoft Corp, and VNC, a remote display system, distributed by AT&T Corp. It allows users to securely view files and operate/control applications via encrypted private network or the Internet, from outside home. Fujitsu Laboratories plans to develop various business solutions, using this prototype compact PDA.
For example, it has an idea to connect the PDA and PCs, home gateways and network services. Also, it has plans to develop sensors of devices such as a contactless IC card and radio frequency identification (RFID) system.
Technologies such as location-information technology and user interfaces suitable for use with more high-resolution displays will also be developed, the company said.

HARDWARE: Received this email from Bob Miller this morning - Sammy although a little large it still looks like a mean HPC. The Web Book could be an ideal replacement for me and I am seriously looking at replacing my aged old 728. I will have a look at the price and determine my opinion. I will also post a review if this is the case.Bob is not the only one that is looking to get his hands on a model, Andrew Wolstenholme is looking into getting his hands on the Webbook and will put together a review of it as soon as he possible can. Details on the Web Book can be found - http://coxion.com/tuotteet/webbook.html

SOFTWARE: It is good to see that Mettavant has updated some new software to his list including Warfare Incorporated which is making big headlines across the HPC community. Warfare Incorporated is set in a future ruled by super corporations engaged in no-holds-barred competition for the resources of the galaxy. The action centers around the newly discovered planet Icarus with its astounding mineral wealth and mysterious alien relics. Players take the role of a junior executive at the underdog ACME Exploration Corporation, discoverer of Icarus, and work their way up the corporate ladder by demonstrating their strategic and tactical skills in a campaign of increasingly challenging missions. Early missions concentrate on resource gathering and combat with ACME's chief rival OMNI Industries and as the game develops other factions and the power of the alien technologies come into play. HARDWARE: So as we reported last week the Modular Computing Core has been released. Now its a clever idea but I do not know if it will work. I received a couple of emails regarding the concept -

Sammy would you want to walk around with something that big> Plus it looks quite heavy. I do not think this is the way forward
- Rob Peel

Nice idea but doomed to fail. Plug into a PC? You need something solid which you can open up and use anywhere like your HPC. I do not think this is the way forward for mobile computing

Just take a look at the price and that will tell you if this will be a selling product - the answer is no

ROUND UP: Yesterday I had a nice day off and I am on holiday in Ireland at the moment. Anyway a number of updates -

7xx's j7xxUtil 1.2 (Added November 7, 2003) is the latest review on Clinton Fitch's HPC Review website. As always Henri produces excellent software titles and I remember them well from my Psion days. Anyway as ever Clinton has produced an excellent review which you read here - http://www.clintonfitch.com/

USER THOUGHT: I received this email this morning from Danny Beckinfield Jnr - "Sammy thanks for the site, I have been using my J720 for the last three years and have made every use of it. I recently got the opportunity to played with an IPAQ Pocket PC and I have to say it was a dream of a machine and yet there really was no appeal for me to make the purchase. I would dearly miss the keyboard and also the wide screen. It may be a little bulky but I can achieve more using my 720 than I would with a Pocket PC and it with this decision that I have decided to stay with my 720"

Friday, November 07, 2003
WEBSITE: This from HPC Factor today who are woking on some server problems - "I would just like to apologise for the recent spate of downtime here at HPC:Factor. Our servers primary router to the Internet has had a bad firmware update and it is sporadically dropping out. We are working on it and thank the community for its patience." Chris will no doubt get things sorted. - http://www.hpcfactor.com/

THOUGHT: Good evening, well I nearly dropped my HPC on the concrete floor today. Took it out of my bag and it went flying missed the floor and landed on the grass turf. Phew I thought. I have had my 720 for years and I did not want to get in a scrape today. Anyway not a mark on it you will be pleased to know.

NEWS: Microsoft Mobile Device Business Architect Leaves
U.S. software maker Microsoft said on Thursday the executive in charge of its fast growing mobile devices software business is leaving the company.
Danish national Juha Christensen, 39, who joined Microsoft some four years ago to breathe new life into what was then a fledgling business for handheld computer systems, has turned Microsoft into a major player in mobile software, signing deals with global telecoms operators and cell phone producers.
Christensen, who declined comment, will leave Microsoft by the end of this month, said a spokeswoman for Microsoft Mobile in London after sources told Reuters about his departure.
He will pursue other opportunities in wireless communications, according to a source close to Christensen.
"We are sad to see Juha Christensen leave Microsoft. He has brought great understanding of the market and strategic insight into what Microsoft can do to build a great business," Microsoft said in a statement.
It is the second time a creator of a new Microsoft business is leaving. Last year, the co-founder of video games console Xbox, Seamus Blackley, departed. Like Christensen, Blackley resigned within a year of the commercial launch of the first products.
Blackley left shortly after disappointing Xbox sales. Juha is leaving amid mixed successes in Mobile.
Pocket PC sales have been strong, but the take-up of its smart mobile phones, the first of which were unveiled late last year, is slower than many had expected. The overall Mobile division is still loss-making.
"Juha has done an excellent job. He's taken the division as far as it would. But the returns aren't there yet. He was probably sick of hearing that (in Microsoft)," said analyst Andy Brown, European head of mobile devices research at IDC.

Using Elite Plus downloaded from

And PocketDos

I installed Elite Plus on my storage card (simple Cut and Paste). Run PocketDos and set the display to MCGA. Run Elite from PocketDos and On the start up options select MCGA as the display type and.....

You have 'Elite'!!!!! OMG!!!!

One small point (alright, may be 3)

1. You need the Novella as you have to type in a correct word to start the game.

2. I have not tried to save a game yet

3. I'm using a non registered version so every few minutes PocketDos pauses for 30Secs

But who cares!!! Elite.. On My J720 WOW!!!

HARDWARE: "On November 7th, 2003, the first modular computer will be publicly available, and mobile computing will change forever..." they are the words according to developer AntelopeTechnologies. Again according to their website: "Modular Computing is a simple but revolutionary concept that extends the desktop computing paradigm to mobile computers. Today, the desktop computer under your desk is physically separate from the monitor, keyboard, and mouse that are on top of your desk.  You can upgrade your "computer" (the device that powers your applications and stores your data) at any time without changing the screen, keyboard, or mouse (the devices you use to interact with your computer). Antelope Technologies has extended this model to every place where computing power is, or soon will be, important to you.  The result of nearly 4 years of research and development work and over a year of customer trials, Antelope will ship the first public release of the Modular Computing Platform on November 7th, 2003. At the heart of the Platform is the Modular Computing Core or "MCC", a full computer that measures an astonishingly small 7.6 x 12.7 x 1.9 cm (3" x 5" x 3/4"). The MCC contains all the normal features of a desktop computer: a processor, a hard drive, memory, video card, audio card, Windows XPTM Professional, and more. It is an amazingly compact replacement for that big computer box under your desk.  And by being so small, you can take it with you at all times (in your pocket if you like), unlike your desktop computer." The Mobile Computer Core, or MCC, is made up of a 1 GHz Crusoe processor, 256 MB of RAM, and a 10 GB or 15 GB hard drive. It runs Windows XP Professional. All this fits into a device that is just 3 by 5 by .75 inches and weighs 9 ounces. More details.

USER THOUGHT: Just upgraded from a 720 to a 728 Sammy and I have to say that it was my only choice because the 720 I used previously was almost dead, the hinges were almost gone and I needed to get my hands on a replacement as soon as I could so I opted for the 728 and so far all seems to be well. I like the new device.
