END OF YEAR THOUGHTS: So the end of the year is drawing to a close, wow it has gone by fast and so I know many of you will have your plans already laid out for tonight and tmrw, so if this is the only chance you will get to visit the site today, then may I wish you all the best for 2003. I remember saying something like this for the big 2000 New Year bash. Personally I have lots of friends coming round for one of those New Year jazz parties in my apartment here in Manchester UK. However back to the point, have a good one anyway whatever your doing, and we will all be back to normal next week. I hope that you have enjoyed our ongoing coverage over the holiday season, it seemed to have been a busy and packed two weeks worth of updates. Anyway make a note in your diaries for the forthcoming year the big TECHXNY event in New York at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, 11th Avenue between 34th and 39th Streets. If like me you have been to previous events its a real shocase for us portable computer and PDA fans, with every handheld manufacturer there. It's worth registering for the event early, even if it is only nine months off. However its a great event and those who go every year will realise that its in the September (September 16-18, 2003) as opposed to June. I remember the heat last year. Check out full details on the TECHXNY website. OK, I am off now preparing for those New Year presentations but I would like to thank you all for your support during 2002, you have all been amazing as ever, with on average almost 1800 visitors per day to this site, we appreciate all your contributions. It's a light news day today, so have a great evening and Happy New Year wherever you are.

GOING WIRELESS: Going wireless seems to be getting more and more popular. With the right wireless card and drivers, see this post on our Forum, and under the right circumstances you and your HPC would be surfing the net wirelessly. There are some great resources on the net that provide you with information on the topic. Here is a good site aimed at begineers and experts The Wireless Revolution. There are lots of links to other sites and again we will cover more of these over the forthcoming weeks. A wide range of cards work on the 720, but you will need the relevant drivers associated with those cards, again check out this forum posting and indeed there are others. I actually surf wirelessly on my Apple Mac which you can read about here. Not quite on my 720, although I plan to give it a go over the next few weeks. However I know from your emails that there are plenty of you doing it.

EDITORIAL: Got a couple of things lined up including a small competition lined up for January, which I will give you more information just after the New Year. I have just realised that coming up is the last weekend of the year. Blimey where did 2002 go? Anyway I have been talking to a number of people on IM over the last day or so and you know, it's amazing the number of people who are not prepapred to part with the cash to invest in a new 728. I'm the same, not that I do not want to part with the cash but my 720 at the moment is all that I need. Someone today told me he hated the case design, the two tone of the 728. I must admit he is not the only one to have stated that to me. But I wonder to muself when I am writing this piece up next year where will we be. What will the HPC community be like in 12 months time? Don't get me wrong I will still be here, throwing the html together in my basic way for the site, but your comments and emails makle it worth the while, and I would like to say a big thank you to those that have donated to the site. I can never get round to responding to each email, that comes through, but I do read them and I appreciate them all and I do try and respond to as many as I can. Sometimes the best way to get me is by IM. See the details above. So as enter what is the last weekend of the year and what a year it's been. It's been a year where we have tried to put some normality back into our lives after 9/11, a year when they say that a human has been cloned, (yesterdays news), mixed feelings on this one, and the release of a new HPC from Jornada 728. However something tells me its the last we have seen of the big HPC players and its time for the community to support itself more now than ever before and if this is the case, you can rely on Handheld Addict being here to support the whole of the community. I just steer the ship, you guys are the ones that drive it. Have a safe weekend and continue to enjoy the holiday season.

USER TUTORIAL: A few weeks ago on the forum I asked if anyone figured out how to stream Internet radio channels over broadband (wireless) on the J720. A couple of us have figured out a way that works wonderfully.

First of all, you need to download the GSPlayer from:

http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA032810/gsp.htm

English version here:

http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA032810/files/gsp171a_eng.zip

I have to thank the author, Y.Nagamidori, for an EXCELLENT MP3 and streaming client. The author has gone above and beyond with this client which provides streaming, but also allows audio customizations including equalizer, 3-D effects, and enhanced bass settings.

The GSPlayer.exe file for the ARM processor (contained in the downloaded zip file) is copied into whatever directory you wish (I put mine on a compact flash storage card and created a desktop shorcut). Under the "options" menu is a tab to associate files with GSPlayer (.mp3 files and .m3u and .pls playlist files).

After associating the files, the user can now open Pocket IE, go to any Internet Radio site (I recommend www.shoutcast.com ), and select an audio stream. Ofver my wireless connection, I have selected up to 160 kbps streams which sound great through earphones connected to the Jornada. Hook up a pair of desktop computer speakers or the like and you have a great little stereo.

The downloaded ZIP file also contains a GSPlayer client for the desktop pc, and the Pocket PC. I use the PPC version on a Toshiba e740 Pocket PC - which has better audio cpabilities than the 720 (less distortion, cleaner audio - at least to my ears.)

Thought I'd share my experience and hope this helps someone else.

- Swave

NEWS: I was talking to a Windows CE developer last night by IM, and he was telling me that he is developing a new email client that will be able to sync Hotmail, AOL Mail and normal POP mail onto your Handheld, with the ability to send AOL Mail, Hotmail and again, normal POP Mail either connected to your PC, or wirelessly. I have also asked him to investigate whether a version can be adapted for Macs. As we always do we will keep you posted.

OFF BEAT: Nice to see that New York had it's first white christmas in thirty years yesterday. I was in the UK at the time and watched it all live on webcam courtesy of Earthcam. It really added to the Christmas atmosphere. By the way if your new to the site and have just been given a HPC for Christmas or just purchased one as an indulgence then welcome to the site. Sit down, stay a while and enjoy the content. ;-)

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL FROM EVERYONE AT HANDHELD ADDICT Amazingly, I have received a number of emails from you wishing me all the best and I would like to thank you for sending your email and icards they are a delight to see. In the meantime we continue the site as usual as there are many of you who have visited the site today.
- Sammual (webmaster)

NEW WEBSITE LAUNCH: We have launched a website something on the same lines as Handheld Addict, its called A Mac Addition and is aimed for those that use Apple Macs especially those who use them on a portable basis such as a Powerbook or i Book. We intend to update the site on a daily basis, and like how this site started content will be updated as the site builds. To access A Mac Addiction then CLICK HERE, and remember to check the site out daily.
- Sammual (webmaster)

USER THOUGHT: I have just received a J728 for Christmas and would like to say that its the best portable computer that I have owned. I now need to go in search of software however I must admit that I think for everyday essentials I have all the programs that I need on my J728. Anyway can I say merry Christmas to everyone who posts on the wensite and for the great service that they provide.
- Lee Sentle, Bath, UK

EDITORIAL: I have been reading the wishlist for the new future HPC. Perhaps I can shed some light on the development of the Jornada 720/728.

X-Scale is not as fast as it's touted to be. In fact, without any firmware optimisations, the X-scale actually performs slower than the SA1110. The
only real advantage is the power savings from using an X-scale.

128MB RAM is not possible because of the limitations of the WinCE 3.0 core. The most significant difference between the 720 & 728 is the that HP implemented a service pack for the 728 which allows it to go up to 64MB RAM. We've actually tried changing the RAM chips on the 720 to 64MB but because the firmware does not support it, it does not work. I'm still trying to get my hands on a 728 RAM/ROM board. Apparently, HP won't be offering an upgrade.

The smart card slot is an interesting feature. Actually, there's a commonly available smart card by Gemplus that appears to be recognised by the Jornada. The only issue left is writing software that works with it.

Unfortunately, R&D for HP PDAs has moved to Huston USA. I do fear that they might kill the project there in favour of the iPAQ.

RESOURCE: Remember if you have just received a HPC this Christmas and your a little unsure as to where to find some software then look no further than these two excellent sites, that are regular visitors know all about. They are best reference sites that are out and well worth bookmarking:

THOUGHT: First of all I want to say Merry Christmas to those that are jetting off for the holiday season today, because I know that many of you are and for some this will be the last day that some of you will be visiting the website. We will be here and updating the site over the festive season. Sllightly off track I'm posting today in a slightly different format by using my Apple Powerbook G4 and an Airport card that I was given and I must admit that I am very happy with my new investment it seems to be replacing my PC, however it cannot replace my J720 as an essential portable computer which to me, is seen more than simply a PDA. You know I still get many emails from people who ask whether they should purchace a J680, J720, or J728 as a PDA. I tend to tell them that they should not be seen as a PDA in fact they are more than that, they are portable computers and should be treated as such. In addition there are other HPC's outhere not just the Jornada range that deserve recognition, yes the Jornada range may be the most popular and we discuss them regularly here but I know from reader emails that they are not the only HPC's that many of you use, and remember that this website is just as much for your use as those with Jornada's. In fact this site is for everyone with a HPC, whether it's new off the shelf such as a J728, or someone who has owned a J720 since it's first day, then this website is for you. In addition I wanted to let you know that we have a lot of Psion users who also take a look at the site and again, we welcome you with open arms and hope that if you are looking for an alternative HPC, then this site will give you some sort of advice. Once again if this is the last time that you will be looking into the site, before the festivive season really begins, then may I wish you and yours a peaceful and safe holiday, whatever religion or belief.
- Sammual (webmaster)

USER THOUGHT: I thought that I would continue with the recent post on what enhancements I would like to see in HPC's:

>400MHz processor
External record button for voice recorder
7.5" TFT screen 300x800 (1/2 SVGA), reflective.
Size: Shorter in length, width and thickness compared to J720. Hence less weight (<300g is preferable)
>20 hours battery life
CF and PCMCIA as J720, no smart card
128Mb internal RAM
Pocket word supports tables, multi numbering, headers and footers, word graphics, page setup, Paragraph line spacing
Pocket excel supports graphs, multi sheet, more functions, conditional formating, spell check
Pocket PowerPoint Editor
MS pocket project compatible S/W as an add-on (full active sync synchronization)
MS pocket visio compatible S/W as an add-on (full active sync synchronization)
Email to support read/unread status change, private and other folders sync, flags, preview pane, draft folder, other object attachments

Pocket outlook to support attached files/shortcuts to objects
Keyboard: Less buttons (cancel hot keys), and larger ones for easier typing. Psion S5 keyboard.
Availability of having certain people calenders saved/sync on the HPC from the outlook server (only busy/free data)
Turn on automatically when physically open
Attach picture to contact
Bottom line: Windows powered (not CE), but instant power on???
Ball mouse instead of touch screen

CAN YOU HELP?Can you help our friends at Image 911, the makers of the keyboard protective skins? Email Sandy at Image 911 here.

"PocketTV is available but, it won't/can't play the MMA format movies. Nor will it play music videos. So, I got DivX, and installed the same... only to find that when I selected a movie it either keeps the hourglass spinning, OR it plays for the first 3 seconds and then locks out, OR - nothing happens for the first few minutes and then a small message box appears with stats in it. Anyhow, any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated! "

SURVEY RESULTS: So last week I asked what you all wanted on your Christmas wish, or how your HPC, no matter what model could be changed. Many of you wanted, in fact, out of the 143 emails that I looked through this topped the most requested feature and that was Bluetooth and its ability to connect to other devices. Many of you wished for the ability to be able to run Pocket PC applications, which I believe from reading through the forum and reading the site over the last week is something which is becoming more of a reality. Joint third was a ROM that could be upgraded for the latest in software updates and Built-in IEEE 802.11 support. Thanks to those that emailed in. I will have a new survey either later this week, or early next week. In the meantime to you all, have a safe and happy holiday.

EDITORIAL: Firstly, I am back and thank you for the many emails that I received from you guys whilst I have been away. As many of you know I now divide my time between living in New York and living in Manchester, UK, and believe me there is a difference. Thanks to those that I met up for coffee and a great chat thanks especially to Lewis, Stace, Jordon, John and Marg (thanks for the directions - you guys know what I mean) and Viv. We met up with our HPC's and enjoyed each others company. I thought nice convenient cafe would be the best option and I chose Doma, close to St Vincents Hospital in New York, close to the West Village and is well recomended. I have been there several times before and the food, coffee and company as ever is great. Anyway I was also to pleased to take a good look at the new Apple Store in SoHo as a newcomer top the world of Apple Macs with my new Powerbook G4 which I am pleased with and I was invited down to take a good look at the place. I would like to thank Brad there who gave some great presentation workshops where I actually learn't a lot. I also managed top spend a fortune there at the same time but that was not a problem. As ever the 720 came with me and is always the ideal travelling companion with many hours of battery life. When I was in NY someone asked me when I was planning to upgrade to the 728 and you know what? I have no plans to at the moment and thats the truth it does everything that it needs to for me anyway so I am sticking with my 720 for at least the time being. Anyway I have a lot to catch up on and will try and respond to your emails as the week continues. Now we have a little less than a week till Christmas and with this being the case we will be busy, I have no plans to take a vacation, so there will be updates to the site throughout the forthcoming Christmas period so stay tuned.
- Sammual (webmaster)

NEWS: Here is a good site that will find its way to my links at the left hand side of the page, its called ShadesJ720. Many problems posted relate to Wireless Networking. The site offers ideas and views on products and solutions currently available. These are not intended to be the 'be-all and end-all' answers, just a pointer with opinions and a few work-a-rounds. I like what I see with this website.
- Sammual (webmaster)

RESOURCE: Just to inform people who are interested in having a great compiler (which really works) for the HPC2000, that you can find "JavaIDE" on my pages at: http://mypage.bluewin.ch/YetAnotherHomePage/j7xx/j7xx.html

under "Software --> Programming --> Languages --> JavaIDE"

JavaIDE is a great application made by "Jos A. Horsmeier" and is a multi window Java application that enables you to edit Java source files (or any other text file as a matter of fact), compile the source files into .class files. Compiled .class files can be run in the same virtual machine the IDE runs on. Files can be archived (and compressed) by the Java archive utility, present in the IDE. In order to facilitate the installation, I have created a CAB that contains everything you need. The download id 5Mb and the CAB you need to install is 11Mb, so install it on the Storage Card.
- Henri Spagnolo

SOFTWARE:PrivateCrypto is freeware for personal use on PC and PPC. Using the 4 PPC-dlls and doing the 300->301 trick, it runs on the J720 also.
There was a minor problem with the Hex-Editor though which I don't understand yet, but it was resolved. Also menus/pages must be handled carefully (i.e. its not fully campatible; another dll may be partly incompatible). THOUGHT: There is more to add to the site but I'm still jet lagged for the moment. I believe there is a problem with one or two opf the links that trigger an email to me. I'll try and sort that over the next 24 hours, I presume it's one of my great HTML mess up's. But we will fix it. In the meantime I am aware that I have Ian's survey results (and some of your great comments) to post from last week, which I have been unable to post because of my recent trip to the Big Apple, but again we will get there. In addition I have just updated the linkls to the left of the page with new sites listed above.

NEWS: RUNNING POCKET PC APPLICATIONS ON YOUR HPC IS HERE
Those that may have not ventured into the forum will suprised to hear that it looks like someone has found a way to run Pocket PC applications on a HPC. Now the signs are promising and obviously there will be problems but it looks like many people are having an element of success. We can all be thanks to qihailiang. Here are his comments on how to work this and get Pocket PC applications running on your HPC:

"you just need 4 dll files(aygshell.dll/DocList.dll/gx.dll/mfcce301.dll) from pocket pc. and coy them to your 720's windows.
then all pokect pc software can work on your 720.include PDF and realone player.that is very cool."

Obviously there is more on the subject and if you click here you can read the whole thread and see what success others are having, and the full method of getting Pocket PC applications running on your HPC. I will tell you this, it certainly has the HPC community excited.............
- Sammual (webmaster)

USER THOUGHT ON RUNNING POCKET PC APPLICATIONS ON YOUR HPC: It's true, some Pocket PC programs work and some definitely don't. To use them you need a virtual display program that turns the screen for 90 degrees, otherwise you can't see the whole screen of the PPC program. A good, but expensive program which will do this is Nyditot virtual display. Anyway, and this is why the fuzz started, the adobe acrobat reader for the PPC arm processor didn't work on my machine (720) at all. It gives all kinds of faults. Faults, like error at adress this and that (that btw triggers some nice memories at the good old days of windows 3.1 an 95). Some programs that I have seen working are:
- good old Jimmies Turjah for the iPaq
- resco retris

I'm still experimenting with some other programs. Maybe others can report their findings with other PPC apps

- thats right if you wish to leave your comments on the forum to what applications work and don't, click here, alternativly send me an email and here on the front page of the site - Sammual (webmaster)

EDITORIAL OK, well a little off beat is that I have not had access to the internet for a day or so because I just got delivery of my new Apple Powerbook G4 which by the way is a brilliant machine. The problem I had was that my local ADSL Broadband company here in the UK, BT, did not have drivers that worked on it. This led me to think about a number of issues, it's quite on par to what is happening within our HPC community, a lack of software or drivers which enable our HPC's to function and work with ease. Yes, we know that we hit upon a barrier when we talk about the amount of software available to HPC users however what about getting those printers to work, or enabiling bluetooth, or obtaining AOL services on your 700 series handheld. Yes, it's haerd work and to be honest I do not see it getting any better. However we are a community that likes to help others, you only have to take a look at the forum pages to see that there are many newbies outthere who need the help of those used to the problems that we HPC users experience. I want to end today on this note, despite the troubles, the lack of software etc, we really do love our handhelds and we use them for a reason, not as a fashion statement or a trendy piece of computer equipment but because it offers us value for service, in other words we get something out of it, and we find a damm good use for our Handhelds and as we all know they certainly we're not cheap to purchase so thats why we ensure we get our monies worth out of them and I can personally say that my Jornada 720 has certainly paid for itself at least twice over.
- Sammual (webmaster)

USER THOUGHT: I am frustrated at the lack of support that Yahoo offers it's Handheld users. Here is an example it worked once last week after trying it daily, this week there has been no connection. Come on Yahoo you expect us to download your messeneger, pay for your email facility but pull support for us Windows CE users?
- Richard Jordon

NEWS: A few months back, I mentioned a great arcade game that works for the Jornada 700 series HPC called G-Pod, produced by AIM Productions. The full version has been reduced in price to US$4.99 on the company website, at http://www.aimproductions.be/pda_hpc.html - it's a great deal at this price. Also, for those who have been searching for a program that reads Adobe documents, look no further than Adobe Reader for Pocket PC. In the forum section there is a workaround to make the software work on a 720, which has been posted by Qi Hailiang. It does involve adding four dll files to your Jornada and tinkering a bit with the .exe file, but once that's done the Reader works like a charm. I tried the changes with Adobe's PocketPC Reader software and it ran - even full-screen, which is nice. This workabout also makes other PocketPC software work on a Jornada 720 - but not all. But the main problem with most I've tried is that the screen format is still designed for a PocketPC, not the wider Jornada screen.

THOUGHT: Keep those survey thoughts coming in. We have received many responces so many thanks for those in so far. The question to this weeks survey is:

What changes would you make to the present crop of Handheld computers? In other words what improvements would you make in order to make your HPC even better?

Email then to Ian via my email address at: sammymcloughlin@mac.com
- Sammual (webmaster)

USER THOUGHT: I have at present the Jornada 720 and I am hoping that my wife has made good note of my Christmas wish list, in other words I have asked for a J728. However I am getting the usual questions, why would I want another HPC for? How do you explain this to someone? Anyway lets hop that I receive the benifit of the doubt and get to play with my new toy on Christmas day.

USER THOUGHT: I am doing some research on handheld computer usage and need some info. I have had a 720 for about a year. I live in the US in Virginia but have travelled all over the US. I have only ever seen one other 720 in use. I know many 720 users are not from the technically skeptical US, so where are you from? Feel free to send me an e-mail or post here. Thanks!

WEBSITE: Ed McCarthy has posted a good user piece on using his Sierra Wireless AirCard 750 and a T-Mobile Internet plan on his Jornada 720. You can read his review on the Simply HPC website.
- Sammual (webmaster)

USER THOUGHT: Totally agree with the editorial by Richard on the Zen method of using HPC!! Keep it simple - this is how to get the most out of your HPC as is, without any additional software (bloatware) needed... I have also spent ages looking around for this and that when I was using Pocket PC - almost to the point of never really using it for the intended purpose er..productivity! I came to the HPC because of the much better(IMO)program set - straight out of the box and I have been proved right! MS WORD/EXCEL/POWER POINT are VERY usable in my workplace. The hours we waste downloading this and that always trying to 'improve' functionality. My 720 is fully functional and has to be closer to a Desktop PC Companion than the PPC. I do really think that if these devises were marketed abit better - they would become more popular - that is the only downside I can see, we are not well supported unlike the PPC clan. But hey, saying that, the PPC users, as I know, have to change up to a new OS every 1-2years or so!! Otherwise you are 'old news' lol

Frankly I subscribe to the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' school of thought. I do not want to upgrade the OS everytime MS wants more money!!

EDITORIAL: I have always said that one of the best attributes to my business life has always been my trusty 720. Let me tell you why I originally chose the 720. Well like many other people I was under the impression that there was plenty of software for my 720. Wow was I wrong, unfortunatly I had not really done my research and went in and purchased it without investigation. Not that I regret purchasing the 720, it has certainly served me well and to be honest a lot of these editorials that I type up on this website is actually typed up on my 720 and then uploaded onto my PC. My tip and is the main tip that I give to those just about to go out and purchase a handheld who write to me and ask what sort of software is available is basically go and do your homework. Check out Mettavants and Henris's 700 series websites and check to see if the software that you want is available and it is, great. Regular readers will know their links however those that are not sure check out the links at the left hand side of the page. In the meantime the number of software titles for the Handheld is certainly increasing and this is great to see. However do not be too dissapointed if you feel that there is a lack of software as your Handheld is capable of a lot more than just the basics and third party software may not be appropriate. So my final advice tonight is for you to do your research, check out the softyware that you require, and if it is available support the shareware house or author who offers it. However your HPC is capable of a lot with or without third party applications.

NEWS: A little while ago AOL dropped beta testing of their email and internet client for HPC's and as far as I have been informed their Pocket PC 2002 platform. The only platforms that are supported are the original Pocket PC Platform and also Palm handhelds. However a reputable source has informed me that they are back on track with beta testing a AOL client offering an assortment of features including attachment support. At present it's to be tested on a small number of Pocket PC's handhelds but our source says that work on beta testing on Handhelds PC's is well underway with an assortment of features, again with attachment support. Personally I cannot wait!!!!!!!!
